HMS Bulletproof Eco

Most sustainable carabiner in the world

In launching the HMS BULLETPROOF ECO, EDELRID is bringing its first ever non-anodized carabiner to the market. Reduced to the essentials, this provides an ecological alternative to an anodized standard carabiner. The stylish industrial look is a fantastic side effect.

But there's more to these carabiners than the missing anodizing process and chemicals. The tried and trusted steel insert in the apex of our BULLETPROOF carabiners reduce wear on both the biner and the rope. And since nearly every product comes with a packaging, we also tackled this part and made it climate neutral. Learn more about the HMS BULLETPROOF ECO and the steps we took to make it as sustainable as possible.

We climbers love our gear. We nurture and cherish our equipment as through it were priceless treasure and never tire of the beautiful colors and shapes of our carabiners, quickdraws & co. However, our addiction to equipment also comes at a price.

Our equipment is anodized using toxic chemicals. The wastewater from the dyeing process is poisonous and, if not properly disposed of, extremely harmful to humans and the environment. We have to admit that the main purpose of anodizing is to color our equipment. The process has no effect on its strength. It does admittedly increase the resistance to corrosion, but only negligibly so providing the equipment is used normally and stored properly.

We therefore have to ask ourselves if we cannot do without all the bright colors for the sake of a healthy environment. Here at EDELRID, we have answered this question with a clear "yes". In launching the HMS BULLETPROOF ECO, we are bringing our first ever non-anodized carabiner to the market. This gives consumers an ecological alternative to an anodized standard carabiner for the first time.

The HMS BULLETPROOF ECO is available as a (1) screwgate or (2) Triple Lock version.

Both models have the same strength properties as their anodized relations. A further plus with regard to sustainability is the (3) steel insert in the carabiner's vertex. This prevents premature wear as a result of rope friction or bolt hangers, thereby significantly extending the service life of both the rope and the carabiner.

A little bit of background about anodizing:

  • Anodizing aluminium alloys increases their corrosion resistance, their abrasion resistance and makes them look great. It does not increase their strength.

  • Problem: The wastewater of this process needs to be handled very carefully to not contaminate the environment.

  • To start addressing this issue, we are launching a new eco line. Our eco line is made of carabiners which have not been anodized. They are as strong and long lasting as anodized karabiners.

  • Non-anodized carabiners will be found under the color name „ECO".

With our suppliers we make sure that this gets treated with the necessary cautions. However, as always, not doing it is the best option for the environment. We just would like to give everyone this alternative!

ECO LINE Q&A

WILL THE ECO CARABINERS BE RUSTY AFTER 6 MONTHS OF USE ?
No. We have tested the carabiners thoroughly during 12 months with a normal exposure to the elements and didn't notice any corrosion. In addition we simulated 5 years of aging in our weather chamber without any negative consequences on the biners.

WHY START WITH THESE 2 CARABINERS ?
These biners are ment to be used for belaying. A task where there are no arguments why you would need an anodized biner. As they have our steel insert, abrasion is not an issue.

WILL WE OFFER AN ECO VERSION FOR ALL OF OUR CARABINERS IN THE FUTURE ?
This is a proposal that we make to the market. If the market receives it well, we can progressively extend our eco line to the rest of our carabiners.

The message is simple: There are different carabiners for different tasks. If there is no threat of potential corrosion (e.g. in use for Sport Climbing) there is no excuse why not to choose an eco friendly biner.
